Guido Monaco (c. 991/992 - 1033) invented musical notation that set precedent in writing music by creating a printed red line as a fixed point to show the position of other notes that were defined with accent marks to indicate direction of pitch. The red line was an "F" line because the line represented the note "F." This was later renamed with the French word, "clef," which means "key." Later, the other lines of the staff were added. Guido invented the "do, ra, mi" scale.
