Richard has been a professional in the US Capital Markets since 1972 transferring his engineering skills to the trading and investment world. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and a master of science from Brooklyn Polytechnic University . He considers himself as a self-developed Financial Engineer.
After working at Grumman Aerospace in the late 1960’s, Richard became a US Treasury Securities trader in the primary dealer community in 1972. He became the first long bond trader for Bache in 1978, then formed the Government Bond Department at LF Rothschild in 1981, helping establish that firm as a primary dealer in 1986. This experience gave him the insights to be an expert on monetary policy, which he features in his ValuEngine newsletters and commentaries.
While at LF Rothschild Richard began to write research covering the US Capital Markets in 1984 and in 1988 formed Global Market Consultants to communicate his ideas to high net worth individuals and institutions around the globe. Richard’s research has been used by major institutions such as the Open Market Trading Desk at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York , the Treasurer, State of Ohio , Wall Street professional traders, institutional investors and high net worth individuals.
Richard’s unique research approach has been incorporated into several financial organizations over the years. He was the US Treasury Strategist at Smith Barney 1991 through 1995, the Chief Financial Strategist for William R. Hough 1997 into 1999, and Chief Market Strategist for Joseph Stevens & Co., Inc. 1999 to 2008. In 2005 and 2006 he was a contributor to RealMoney.com, and contributed as Chief Market Strategist for RightSide Advisors until August 2008. Richard has been the Chief Market Strategist for ValuEngine since September 2008, and joined Niagara International Capital in the same role in December 2009. In early 2012 he began to write a weekly story posted on Forbes.com and in April became a daily contributor to TheStreet.com.
Richard’s industry licenses include (Series 7), Registered Principal (Series 24) and he passed the exam for Investment Advisor (Series 65). At LF Rothschild he supervised approximately sixty US Treasury and agency traders, and the associated institutional sales force. At Smith Barney he was the desk strategist on the primary dealer desk and focused on the Middle Market Institutional Salesforce. At Joseph Stevens he helped the Compliance Department as needed to review written materials presented by the brokers to their clients, which included high net worth individuals and institutions such as Hedge Funds. He also provided Technical Trading Strategies to selected clients of Joseph Stevens. As an Investment Advisor, Richard assisted the Treasurer, State of Ohio in managing roughly $1 billion of the state’s general funds.
Over the years Richard appeared many times in the financial media, on networks such as CNBC, CNN, CNNfn, New York 1, Bloomberg TV and radio, Fox Business, Business News Network in Canada, Wall Street Week with Fortune, and the Bill Mazer Radio Show. In 2002, he anchored his own show on Yahoo Finance Vision called, “Traders’ Club with Richard Suttmeier.” Richard has been frequently quoted in USA Today, The NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and The Dow Jones Newswires.
Richard has made numerous speaking appearances in recent years to groups such as the Market Technicians Associations, the American Association of Individual Investors, Wells Fargo Advisors, the Executive Forum at the National Arts Club, and the Investors Roundtable of Wilmington NC.
