Special Report:

Health Care and Medicine since 1950
(in the USA)

This is a special report to take a brief look changes in the medical profession since 1950
and how this may related to current concerns about public health care.

Kalarhythms of the United States
Physical Cycle 28-yrs.     Emotional Cycle 36-yrs.     Intellectual Cycle 44-yrs.

If you have not yet read the Introduction to Kalarhythms,
then you may find it to be a useful option to do so in order to better understand this report.

A Brief Summary on Medical and Health Today

We are currently in a Three-Way High in the United States the Physical Cycle, the Emotional Cycle and the Intellectual Cycle have all crested and are now in the highly productive "2nd Quarter of Expansion." This means that now is a time of great creativity and action in all regards. Throughout this decade, and half way through the next, we will make advances that should surprise even those who expect them.

Since concerns run high on health care issues, it should be noted that Cycles suggest major decisions having long-term results will likely be made before in the next half-decade. This is the day before the night and the time to which future years will reflect. What is also noteworthy is the absence of "3rd Quarter Review and Reform" which comes when a Cycle is in the Low half, when we review and amend previous all things that came before. Consequently, with no reform keeping us in check on environmental medical issues and nation policy, industries like the major drug companies are at great risk of taking grounds that they are given now. The current wide-spread dispensation of products that what may be later found to be harmful could spell the end for some companies. When Cycles return to an era of reform, judicial temperament will not likely view the current disclaimers offered on advertisements and labels as sufficient for exonerating leaders from liability for reaping profit now on may be pulled from the market later. This shake up in the drug in and other industries will likely begin in 2013. In the meantime, we are in a heyday. But on the other side of danger, we are also in a position to make our greatest advancements for well being. It is an exciting and formative time.

A Brief Summary on Where We Are Now in Cycles

American trends 1990 - 2020
2000s: The New Reality This Trirhythmic High in the Cycles came into being after and Upward Physical Crossover in 1999-2000 that put is in a vulnerable period of crisis as we reached an Emotional Peak in 2000. Consequently, we were in a point of over-peculation in an over-bought market when we hit an abrupt Physical crisis and "the bubble burst" in the market. Meanwhile a rising Intellectual Cycle brought us further into space and scientific achievements. The unexpected attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 came from external sources beyond the internal rhythms of the nation producing largest External Aberration in our history. We recovered, due in part to the strong position of our Cycles. We moved on to a Physo-Intellectual Peak in 2006 that gave a pause as real estate sales slowed down. Now we are gaining momentum in a Trirhythmic 2nd Expansion which produces even more energy a Peak and our greatest expressions unfolding in an historic High. We face a moral and emotional crisis in 2009-2010 when we have an Emotional Downward Crossover.

Observations of Mecical changes in context with the changing Rhythms of Time...

3. Science & Technology  1950s Polyrhythms top
Physo-Intellectual High (1951 - 1957)

Medical Breakthroughs came as physicians got new tools. The first plastic artificial heart valve was used on a patient at the Georgetown Medical Center in 1952. The heart-lung machine was developed by John Gibbons to allow the separation of the heart from the circulatory system during surgery that same year. We boosted physical care be the 1st qtr. Precedents of an Intellectual High. In 1953, the first successful open-heart surgery was performed at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first sex change operation was performed on George (Christine) Jorgensen in 1953. Jonas Salk formally certified and tested a vaccine in 1953 to prevent infantile paralysis from polio. Mass inoculations began in 1955. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins discovered the structure of DNA, the basic unit of heredity, to be a double helix in 1953. Alfred C. Kinsey produced "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female" in 1953, (a Physical 2nd Qtr. sequel to "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" from the Physical 1st Qtr. in 1948)

3. Science & Technology  1960s Physical Cycle top
Physical 3rd Qtr. Review (1957 - 1964)

The Surgeon General Denounced Cigarette Smoking after following proof that it causes lung disease.  The Federal Trade Commission called for all packages of cigarettes to carry warning labels announcing the hazards of smoking.  Cigarette advertising was halted in magazines, radio stations, and other sources.  Greater protection came in the Physical 3rd Qtr.

3. Science & Technology  1960s Intellectual Cycle top
Intellectual 1st Qtr. Foundation (1951 - 1962)

Cryobiology was Established in 1962 as a low temperature biology.

Intellectual 2nd Qtr. Expansion (1962 - 1973)

Major Medical Improvements Also Came.  A heart patient was kept alive for several days when Surgeons Implanted a Plastic Heart in 1966.   Har Gobind Khorana Completed Deciphering the DNA Code in 1966.  The structure of the enzyme, ribonuclease (RNA) Was Discovered in 1967.

3. Science & Technology  1974-80 Polyrhythms top
Emo-Intellectual Dbl. 3rd Qtr. Review (1973 - 1982)

Genetic Engineering Research Was Halted by the National Academy of Science in 1974, especially those involving E. coli bacteria, until safer techniques could be developed.  Scientists at the Asilomar Conference in California attempted to establish safety precautions in 1975 by which genetic engineering could be done.  The National Research Act was passed to set standards and limited research on human beings.  Controversy arose in 1978 over the claim that a human being had been cloned.  America felt a need for technological reform in the Emo-Intellectual 3rd Qtr. /p>

The AMA Announced that Cigarettes Do Cause Heat Disease and might cause cancer according to the  results of a 14-year study in 1978.  Surgeon General Julius B. Richmond declared cigarette smoking to be the most important environmental factor contributing to early death, in 1979.  Adversaries against tobacco mounted during the Dbl. 3rd Qtr.

The Medical Community Faced a Record Number of Malpractice Suits against practicing physicians by a zealous public.  Emotion added to medical reform in the Emo-Intellectual 3rd Qtr.  California and New York were the sites of the first strike by doctors in 1975 as they sought to draw attention to the astronomical increases in medical insurance rates.  Twenty-one hospitals in New York reduced services and some doctors refused all but emergency services.  Work slowdowns occurred in other states pending agreement on shorter hours, and better insurance rates. In New York, premiums had increased by 93.5% in one year alone.  Some states saw rates quadruple and many insurance companies dropped malpractice coverage altogether because of the high damages awarded in the flurry of law suits.

3. Science & Technology  1980s Physical Cycle top
Physical 3rd Qtr. Review (1985 - 1992)

Airlines Banned Smoking on all passenger planes in flights of two hours or less in 1988. Northwest Airline made plans to ban smoking on all domestic flights. A New Jersey federal jury awarded $400,000 in damages to the surviving husband whose wife had died in 1984 after forty years of heavy smoking. A Cigarette Manufacturer Was Found Guilty for the Cancer Death of a long time smoker for the first time. In 300 suits in thirty-four years before the case in the Physical 3rd Qtr., the tobacco companies had never lost a case.

3. Science & Technology  1980s Intellectual Cycle top
Intellectual 3rd Qtr. Review (1973 - 1984)

The Surgeon General Responded to as More Women Died From Smoking induced lung cancer. Cigarette advertisers targeted women with advertising campaigns in the 1970s. As more women bought the appeal, more bought the risks that have proven fatal to so many men. The surgeon general's report in 1980 revealed that lung cancer was increasing at such a rate in women that it would soon overtake breast cancer as the leading cause form of terminal cancer. We reconsidered the dangers of smoking in the Intellectual 3rd Qtr.

More than 10,000 Claims of Asbestos Related Medical Problems came against Manville Corporation, the leading asbestos maker and former member of the Dow -Jones thirty Industrial stocks. As a result, the company filed for bankruptcy in August 1982, an Intellectual 3rd Qtr. year.

Medical Malpractice Suits Had Almost Tripled in ten years by 1985. Reforms in the Intellectual 3rd Qtr. were pervasive.

3. Science & Technology  1980s Polyrhythms top
Trirhythmic Low (1985 - 1991)

Chronic Fatigue Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS) was identified and named in 1988. The malady, nicknamed the "yuppie flu," is the feeling of just being out of energy, for no known reason. This inexplicable ailment came during the Three-way Low. While a correlation between these two events is uncertain, it is worth mentioning.

Internal Aberrations (1980s)

3. Science & Technology  1990s Intellectual Cycle top
Intellectual High (1995 - 2017)

Genetic researched continued. As was reported on April 28, 2001, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania used gene therapy to reverse a type of congenital blindness in dogs.

Intellectual 1st Qtr. Foundation (1995 - 2006)

Doctors Reported the First Birth From a Frozen Egg in the U.S. took place iwth a Georgian woman in 1997.

Scientists Announced The First Artificial Human Chromosomes that work properly inside living cells were announced by scientists in March, 1997.

3. Science & Technology  2000s Intellectual Cycle top
Intellectual 1st Qtr. Foundation (1995 - 2006)

Genetic researched continued. Scientists announced on January 26, 2001 that they had decoded the genetic blueprint of rice, the first important plant to have its genome decoded. The US National Institutes of Health began its Mammalian Gene Collection (MGC) project and they reported on February 11, 2001 was that scientists found that the human genome consists of 30,000 genes and that only some 300 were unique to humans as when compared to mice, and the FOXP2 gene was identified as the 1st gene definitively linked to human language. Scientists then published their first examinations of nearly all the human genetic code on February 12, 2001. As was reported on April 28, 2001, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania used gene therapy to reverse a type of congenital blindness in dogs.

Scientists had developed a brain implant that allowed monkeys to control a computer cursor by just by thought, as was reported on March 14, 2002.

US scientists financed by the Pentagon announced that they had synthesized a virus from scratch for the 1st time by building a polio virus relying only on genetic sequence information that was publicly available according to a July 11, 2002 news report.

3. Science & Technology  2000s Polyrhythms top
Trirhythmic

The US House of Representatives voted to criminalize all human cloning in by a vote of 265-102 on July 31, 2001. This issue was facing moral opposition in the Emotional High.  But inasmuch as were in a Three-Way High, opposing points of view took hold and on August 7, 2001, a committee at the National Academy of Sciences were told by three researchers that they were unswayed by arguments against human cloning and would soon try to clone human beings.  The Physo-Intellectual High was calling researchers to act on ideas while the Emotional High countered with humanism.
